Impacts of Caring for Children with Atopic Dermatitis on Mental Health of Their Mothers

Abstract
Objective: This study aims to examine the impact of caring for children with atopic dermatitis on mental health of their mothers.

Methods: We used the Korea Health Panel data collected between 2008 and 2013, including 11,364 mothers with children under 19. Mothers of children with atopic dermatitis were identified when their children had be suffering from atopic dermatitis as a chronic disease. We conducted multiple logistic regression and random effect model with panel data in order to assess the impact of caring for children with atopic dermatitis on stress, depression, suicide thought of mothers.

Results: In 2010, mothers of children with atopic dermatitis had an increased risk of being in severe stress (odds ratio [OR] 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-1.19) and experiencing depression (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.43-1.46) and suicide thought (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.39-1.42). Its impacts varied by age group of children with atopic dermatitis and year of survey. Among mothers from household income of top 60%, caring for children with atopic dermatitis higher risk of experiencing depression (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.01-3.43).

Conclusion: This study confirms that caring for children with atopic dermatitis as a chronic disease is significantly
associated with higher physchological burden of their mothers. Interventions to reduce stress and provide support psychological stability for mothers should be included into a strategies for atopic dermatitis control program.
